This cottage went from an unusable sloped backyard to a complete multi-level waterfront retreat designed for both function and experience.
The property had a steep grade that limited access and made the outdoor space difficult to enjoy, so we completely reimagined the backyard from the ground up.
We built a series of structured levels using retaining walls and interlocking stone, creating a smooth visual flow from the cottage all the way down to the water.
Massive interlocking stairs now connect each platform, making the full landscape accessible while adding a bold architectural statement to the property.
Each level was designed with purpose — from gathering and seating areas with breathtaking lake views to a cozy fire pit space for unforgettable evenings outdoors.
At the waterfront, we completed the experience with stone steps leading directly to the boat dock, turning the entire backyard into a polished and functional escape.
Level Backyard Design
Waterfront Stair Connection
Slope Reimagined
Access Improved
We began with major excavation work to reshape the steep, unusable slope and prepare the property for a safe, buildable multi-level layout.
Retaining walls were installed to secure each platform and create strong separation between the different levels of the backyard.
Large interlocking stairs and usable outdoor zones were built to improve circulation, comfort, and the overall cottage experience.
The final stage connected the backyard to the shoreline with stone steps and completed the full transition from cottage to dock.
